Bermerside Open Air School, Skircoat Green, Halifax
aka Bermerside Convalescent Home
The open air school was opened in 1908 in the grounds of Bermerside House (a country house that had been built in 1872 for Edward Crossley - I am a bit hazy on the Crossley family history but I assume that Edward Crossley may have been related to the Halifx Crossley family who earned their money from carpet making and set up the Halifax orphanage in 1864 - see our page on this).

The school was established as a convalescent home providing schooling for children who were thought to be able to benefit from open air living, many of these children were disabled.
In 1924 the school moved to Quarry House School, Northowram. The school closed in 1966.
