Goldie Leigh Cottage Homes
Were the Goldie Leigh cottage homes the most short-lived children's cottage homes?
Woolwich Union opened the homes in 1902 on Lodge Lane, Abbey Wood but, in 1914 they were taken over for use as a hospital [1] . They had just 12 years as cottage homes in the traditional sense of the term.
There were approxiately 14 cottages each of which had accommodation for around 16 children[2].
We'd love to know more about these cottage homes. If you know about them, please get in touch!

LOOKING FOR RECORDS?
The records for admissions and discharges, the register of children and the register of children sent to Leytonstone from 1902 - 1932 are all at the London Metropolitan Archives. They also have the staff registers, we believe, along with registers for the Goldie Leigh Hospital School from 1950 - 1975.
See our page on accessing records for your rights in terms of looking at archives about cottage homes.
