Looking for information on Chase Farm School. I have found my grandmother listed on the 1911 census as an inmate there. I did buy the book My life at Chase Farm School which was written by a male inmate at the same time my grandmother was there. There were four kids who were inmates and the mother was in Edmonton Workhouse which I gather was attached. My grandmother was Rose May Atkins born 1905 and came to Canada in 1913.
Recently discovered my Grandmother and her sister were in the orphanage CONVENT OF THE LADY OF FIDELITY, UPPER NORWOOD ,according to the 1911 census. Granny was FLORENCE ANNETTA GARDNER Born 1900, her sister was KATHLEEN MARY Born 1902. We know their mother died 1905, but nothing about their father. Any information about why they were there, would be gratefully received. Have tried emailing the sisters @ virgofidelis but had no reply
Hi, I was Pauline Goddard also known as freeman, I was in erdington cottage homes in the 196o,s, we were in the first house just inside the main gate, the house mum was Anne and her husband Brian, I was there with my brothers and sisters, billy, Patricia, Stephen and Patrick and myself, the other children there were a Sylvia, Robert, Kenneth, Anita, Edward o Malloy, and aunts Mary, who was lovely, I remember the taxi parties and my infant school, I had 2 sisters living in the home opposite, Susan and Gwendoline, I loved living there, I was very happy there, we went on holidays to Ludlow, I,m sure the house parents were mr & Mrs Byrnes, they had a son called Dominic and a daughter named Rebecca, if anyone remembers me or any of my brothers and sisters, I would really love to hear from you
When I was born in 1944 I was in pembury hospital in a iron lung I also was in callipers because I had deformed legs after that I remember going into a nuns home for a short period this was around the end of 1940s. I think it was called Hambleton

We are trying to find out more about Lynton Childrens Convalescent home in Devon? My father in law Albert Saunders was sent there aged about 3 in 1918. He suffered was rickets, was illegitimate and born in lslington workhouse. lt appears that he was abandoned in the workhouse and sent down to Devon from London to recouperate. .He was fostered from the home into a family called Marks who lived in Gittisham,Devon,to be a companion for their daughter.
Does anyone know anything about Lynton Childrens Home, and who ran it? Was it a church,or charity? Was it normal for a child to be sent so far away from their birthplace? Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.
My mother's mother died in 1922 in Walton Hospital. My mother's, her daughter's birth, was not recorded because she was so ill before she died. My mother was recorded as being resident at Fazakerley Cottage Homes from 1929 but I don't know where she was resident between 1922 when her mother died and 1929. Anybody out there able to advise?

My brother has just told me about your site so I thought I'd take a look.

Around 1918-1920 our late Father Christopher Reid aged about 5/6 years of Hornby Street and his brother Joseph Reid aged about 10 years (same address) were put into the Cottage Homes Fazakerley by their Auntie Mary when their mother (my grandmother) was taken into Brownlow Hill Hospital after falling ill.

My brother and I are family historians and would love to find out if any photographs exist of our relatives from back then plus any if records might be available for viewing.

Dear Maureen

Please see our page on Fazakerley for details on the records available http://www.childrenscottagehomes.org.uk/fazakerley.html

Hi. I have a dear friend, Peter Dykes who attended CROWTHORN SCHOOL, EDGWORTH in the early 1960's (I think he left in '65). If anyone remembers Peter or knows of any reunions, would you please contact me at: jennystretton@btinternet.com

Thanks
Hi,
Looking information on Joseph and Celia Moran. Both may have been in Nazareth House, Manchester around the early 1920`s. I would appreciate any information.
I am researching my family history having lost my parents in 2002/2006, and recently losing my elder brother in 2012. My brother was an occupant of the St. Mary's Home but always said his recollection of staying there was very slight. Going through family albums recently, I have found a postcard dated 1957 with an aerial picture of St Mary's Home, North Foreland Road, Broadstairs where my brother stayed for a while. I've no family members left to ask for information, so would it be possible to ask you for details of his stay there? Please email me on beverley2015@gmail.com and I can then give you his name.
Kind regards.

Dear Beverley

Hello, I am trying to find information about Braybrook House, Obervation and Assessment Centre, Amos Lane, Wednesfield, Wolverhampton. This home was built on the site of the former Cottage Homes and was a modern building. I was in and out of this home for a number of years; it was a sort of 'holding ground' for children whos social workers couldn't be bothered to find proper accommodation. You'd be dropped off, left and wouldn't know when you'd leave or who with! I am currently putting together my own life story book and I don't have any photos of this home as it has been demolished. Any help would be greatfully received. Thanks
I am seeking to find information about an ancestor who is listed in the 1911 census as being at Meriden Cottage home, Showell lane. He was 10 yrs old at that time, I would like to find out more about meriden Cottage home and hopefully about that ancestor's time there. Could you suggest where I should look. As I am in Australia it makes searching a little more difficult, so any leads would be appreciated.

Hi Lynda
I will do some digging to see what I can find out.

In the meantime, if anyone has any information, please email me and I will put it on the site for Lynda - hello@formerchildrenshomes.org.uk

I Was put into a foster home 196 Sunderton Road, KingsHeath, Birmingham, from 1958 until 1970. does anyone remember me.
Hi there, I'm looking for any information on a former children's home I was admitted to in 1978. I can't seem to find anything on the internet however I believe the home was closed down quite a few years ago.

The name of the home was KIMPTON HOUSE in Southsea, Hampshire. I've seen only one other post on this site relating to someone being placed there in the 1950's. Like the other 'guest' comment, although I don't have any bad recollections of the place or my time there, I still have gaps in my memory.

I was placed there initially as I was a pretty uncontrollable and unruly child - especially as my Mum was expecting my sister at the time (sibling rivallry at it's best!). Any info would be great terri.brown71@hotmail.com, currently living in Sydney, Australia.
Would like to know more of my past from age3till 15 got good times & bad times but thats life .but when you dont know WHY .explain that to our children . Now ive seen this site its a start . Eastry homes from 62 /74 also some other home before in maidstone area
Thank you for this site. I have found valuable information regarding the "Homes for Little Boys' in Farningham where my great grandfather Clifton Alexander Manning was admitted to the Homes in April 1864. Through the wonderful insight of the dignitaries of the day, in particular Mr. Hanbury, my great grandfather was given the opportunity to learn a trade, printing. As the original Cottage Homes of England he was given a "Home" when made an orphan.
hi my name is malcolm copus i remember mr & mrs prosser and they used to take us on holiday to wales and we went windberry picking and stay in a church hall on camp beds happy for any contact on sandra.malc1@gmail.com thanks
My name is Richard Barnard. I was in a home in Horncastle, Lincolnshire for a year in 1964/65. I cannot remember the name, but there were 12 cottages, numbered 1 to 12..I lived in home 6.
I moved from there to Skegness in April 1965..to a house called 'Ellerslie' on Franklin Avenue, where I lived for 3 years.

Dear Richard

The homes you are describing are probably the cottage homes at Horncastle which were called Holmeleigh. There are memories of Holmeleigh here http://www.childrenscottagehomes.org.uk/_holmeleigh_childrens_homes_horncastle.html
If the link doesn't work, you can find the page through our index on the left.

I know I spent time as a child at SPRINGWELL HOUSE school clapham common London, but due to a brain injury in 1981 I have little recollection of why I was sent there and exactly when. I remember sleeping in the playground and marmite toast, singing "Marianina", falling over with a flowerpot in my hand, (I still have the scars) and a little green bus. I think it would have been mid to late 50s. The only info I can muster is "a home for defective children"! The mind boggles! I am trying to find out why I was sent there. I was born in wandsworth in 1947. Can anybody shed some light?

Dear Edward
Springwell House was an open air school for school for children who were ill. It was thought that fresh air had great restorative powers. Some memories of the school are here http://www.childrenscottagehomes.org.uk/springwell_house.html

hi im trying to find a childrens home near ecclesall rd in Sheffield I was there for around 1 year around1974/75. it had its own schooling . it might have been cherry tree or be on a road named cherry tree any info would be gratefully appreciated thanks sam

Hi Sam
Thanks for contacting the site. There was a Cherry Tree Orphanage in Sheffield from 1863 which I think was on Mickley Lane. There was also a more modern children's home also called Cherry Tree which I think was quite close to the orphanage.
I hope that helps.

Hello I am trying to find out about a bronze medal that my father left to me, it is the Hanbury Memorial Prize,it has home for little boys established 1864 engraved on it, and was made by WYON of 287, Regent Street, London. My fathers name was Henry Job Watts I have not any info as to how my father came by it and I would love to know more so when I pass it on I will be able to give some info to my childran about it and possably my father if it was his by wright.

Hi Douglas
The home for little boys was Farningham (have a look at our page on it). Hanbury was Robert Culling Hanbury, MP for Middlesex who was the first President of the Homes for Little Boys. The award was given "to each boy who has left the Home and kept his situation a full year, or longer, and who returns on Old Boys' Day, within five full years of his leaving the Home, having previously sent to the Secretary a written testimonial from his master, stating that he has behaved properly and is industrious". I wonder how it came into your father's hands?

I am trying to find out the name of a children's home in the Merridale Road area of Wolverhampton where I was adopted from can you help me please

Hi David. Could it have been the Orphanage on Penn Road? That's not far from Merridale Road. If not, could you let us know what sort of decade you left this home, and what sort of age you were? It would help us to try to locate it. Many thanks, Gudrun Jane, www.formerchildrenshomes.org.uk
I am looking for anyone who was in Wellington cottage at the hornchurch childrens home fom 1952 to 1956,or went to Bush Elms school hornchurch form 1952 to 1956
I was in Holmeleigh childrens home Horncastle Lincolnshire, in the 1950's and would love to hear any information from anyone who was there at the time.
I was in CCH Cosham approx. 1948 and went to Portsdown school during the week ,and, the weekly walk to church each on top of the hill on sunday. I can't say I liked it, but it wasn't to bad. I joined the 24th Portsmouth Air Scouts which was in the grounds, scrumpt apples, the summer holiday was a day trip to Hayling Island, and at Christmas, parties with the Navy. At one time a trip to an American aircraft carrier. But you could never call it home, and THAT was the sad part. Then I and my sister got Foster Parents and things got a great deal better, thanks to them
